vista beta freezes install

Vista beta freezes on install

I've just downloaded the beta, but in the install, when i try to enter my product key and press 'next', the installation freezes and i have to end the task. I think there may be some problem with connecting to the internet as an error message came up saying this when i tried to check for updates, (though i am connected) so that might be related. Any suggestions?

I am having the EXACT same problem. I am using Daemon Tools to install Vista on a partition and it freezes RIGHT AFTER, I put my validation key in.

I had to uninstall Daemon tools before Vista would even start the upgrade. Said the RAID driver wasn't compatible. Not sure if that has anything to do with your problem. I'm having the completing upgrade hang myself...

Similar issue here. I could enter the product key and go next. On my new harddrive, it provides me the options of creating and formatting a new partition or install directly on the unpartitioned space. I've tried both options and it hanged/ freezed.

I have this very problem too.
Im
installing vista via the iso image directly, so there is no bad c;opy, the hash is OK, what the hell.??????

Try not selecting the updates - as they're very very little, if any at all :o) This might help you to get started: http://www.vistabase.co.uk/welcome.php?getstarted

Actually i think i've worked out what the update problem was - having uninstalled IE Beta 2 the update worked fine so i think that was interfering. Unfortunately, the installation still freezes so i guess that wasn't the problem..

Im having the same problem.. i read that before you install Vista you are meant to uninstall Office 2007. But upon doing that nothing happens.
When i reach the product key dialogue i enter my key, press next then the install just hangs.
If i find a solution i will post it.

I got round the problem by plugging the hard drive into another computer to install, and it worked fine on that computer... but then on moving the hard drive back to the original computer, it starts loading vista but then restarts itself. It won't even start in safe mode. Since it works on the other computer, i think it's some sort of a hardware compatibility issue.

Ok, i've solved the problem - i booted xp on my original computer, and this time did manage to run setup past the product key page. Vista's now installed, and is working fine. I'm not sure this really helps others with the same problem, as this is kind of a work-around solution so i still don't know what the original problem was.

I'm having a slightly different installation problem. I tried to install Windows Vista Beta 2 and the installation freezes when it says Completing Upgrades and the mouse also freezes at that point. I did an upgrade from XP SP2 because that computer don't have a DVD drive. So I had to use Alcohol 52% so it would read the ISO from a virtual drive.

If you are using the downloaded version and have not done this already, try burning the dvd at the slowest speed allowed by your software. MS recommends 1x or 2x. A lot of folks can only go as low as 4x or 6x but even that usually works. MS is aware that the download files are a real problem for a lot of folks. They are very actively working on the problem.

The most common causes of your problem far and away statistically are a problem with a truncated download at some point corrupting your ISO or a problem with the burn.
1) Burn slowly. 4X should be fine. Some of this probably varies with the DVD writer and the media.
2) Make sure to select an ISO tab if there is one on the burning software, and make sure to close the session on the burn.
3) Try this tweak on your Windows XP drive and burn from there:
Get to Dev Manager by typing devmgmt.msc in run/win key + pause break or Rt.click My Computer>Prop>hardware tab>Device Manager if you like 5 steps instead of one cmd. If you're set to PMI here change to DMO and if set to DMO change to PMI using these 5 steps:
1) Click the + in front of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers 2) Double Click the Secondary IDE Controller 3) Click Advanced Settings 4) Under Device 1 Next to Transfer Mode choose DMA (or vise versa)>Click OK 5) Reboot your System
6) Check your burn with a CRC utility and the links for this are below including the direct Taco Bell link. It is very classy, sophisticated, and very Wagner Edstrom/McCann Ericson esque for MSFT to adopt a Taco Bell url for their public Beta 2 CRC checker. Rock on Redmond Rednecks.
Obtain CRC Utility for Vista Beta 2 Here: (The CRC utility is a way to check the integrity of the ISO Burn which is probably where your problem lies--it's #1 on the list):
Here's a link: The CRC utility for Beta 2 is contained here (Scroll down to the bottom under "Additional Information"
Microsoft® Windows® Software Development Kit (SDK) for Beta 2 of Windows Vista and WinFX Runtime Components http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=13F8E273-F5EA-4B7B-B022-97755838DB94&displaylang=en
Additional Information:
To verify that your download of an ISO file for the Windows SDK Beta 2 build is not corrupt, download the CRC Utility. (Note: this is not a Microsoft application. Use at your own risk.)
To run the CRC test, open a command prompt and run the utility. providing it the name of the file (i.e. crc c:\6.0.5383.1.1.WindowsSDK_Vista_idw.DVD.Rel.img) The CRC utility will run two tests on the ISO: it will verify if the ISO is valid, and it will give the AutoCRC signature for the file. The AutoCRC signature for the Windows SDK Beta 2 ISO is 0x28434EEF. You should also confirm the size of the ISO is correct: 1.14 GB (1,229,355,008 bytes).
If it fails any of these three tests, re-download the ISO.
I really like the direct link to it though if you right click CRC here>left click Properties: http://tacobell.iexbeta.com/longhorn/crc.exe
Good luck,
CH
